This is positively, absolutely, definitely, the very last Moda Blockheads 3 block. I think there are 98 total blocks, more if I count the ones I remade or made and then decided not to use. Good grief I have been working on this project forever.
I know it is boring, but I really need to concentrate on adding all the lattices and sewing the rows together. This project needs to be put to bed.
The block above was from one of Lori Holt's Vintage Farm Girl books, I don't recall the name.
Speaking of Lori Holt, is anyone doing her Red Sampler Sew Along? My gosh, that looks like a great project. She is doing it with red fabrics from her various collections for Riley Blake (see below). All the patterns come from her assorted books, mainly the two Farm Girl ones and her Christmas one. From what I have seen on Instagram and her blog it is one gorgeous quilt. But of course, I am never making another red and white quilt, so it shouldn't concern me, right? Right.
Go look on her blog, you know you want to.
My week is going well. Eva is off school due to the county fair, which no one can go to. Don't ask me, I don't make these rules. We made pink cupcakes yesterday and had a lovely relaxing day today. I read aloud to her as long as my voice held out. We are finding that sharing really good chapter books is one of the best things ever. We discovered the author Kate DiCamillo, who is an outstanding author of kids' books. Because of Winn Dixie was the first one we enjoyed, and now we just finished The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Edward is a porcelain rabbit who has some incredible things happen to him. Before that, we read Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz-Ryan. All these books made me cry, which is embarrassing when you are reading aloud to a nine-year-old.
Have any of you read these books to your kids? Do you have any others you would recommend?

I read aloud to my kids all the time! They are ages 9 and 11. I have read all 3 books that you mentioned, though I didn’t read the last one to my kids. I usually first read the books myself, to preview the, and a couple parts of Esperanza would be too intense for one of my kids (we adopted him through foster care, and some books are too similar to what he’s experienced).
One of their favorites has been Trumpet of the Swan. We just read Lily’s Mountain by Hannah Moderow. We also recently read Fatty Legs by Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, and the 10th anniversary edition has great photos in it. We often read W. Bruce Cameron’s series of dog books, such as Shelby’s Story, in between these more intense books! Oh, and we are also reading the Harry Potter series too, which sort of an every-other-day thing for us. We love those books but want to be sure we can read other books too!

I am doing the Lori Holt quilt in red and white. I bought a few cuts of fabric but am mostly using up bits and pieces of my red stash. I have three of the books she’s using and will end up making some of my own blocks when she uses a book I don’t have. It is a beautiful project for sure.

I have read all those books and loved them! Definitely try Kimberly Brubaker Bradley’s “The War that Saved My Life” and it’s sequel “The War I Finally Won.” I gave a copy of her “Jefferson’s Sons” to all the teachers in my life. It’s about Thomas Jefferson’s sons with Sally Hemmings. Very thought provoking and I had some excellent discussions with 6th graders on the book. Also, “Echo” by Pam Munoz Ryan was another great read. Four stories in one with a harmonica as their common thread. My teacher daughter feeds me great reads, so if you need more, let me know. I love that you and Eva enjoy a mini book club! I remember that time with my children so fondly.

I ordered the reds and white background bundles of Lori Holts because I could not resist! One can have one more red and white quilt, right?? Now with Spring and summer on the horizon and a new grand baby too my sewing has slowed, but there is always those Iowa winters ahead!!

When my kids were young we read Laura Ingalls Wilder books, Boxcar Children, Shel Silverstein, and other series I can’t remember (!!) Even when my oldest was “too old” he would quietly sit on the couch while my daughter and I read. Good memories, thanks!

Some of my best memories are of reading to my son when he was young. He often wanted the same story read over. And when I was in grade school, our teachers would read to us after lunch and they always seemed to pick the best books. It was where I was introduced to the Laura Ingles Wilder series.

What fun to be reading books aloud with Eva! I read to my K, ! & 2 students everyday & I enjoyed it as much as they did. When I taught 2nd Grade I had a book club after school with beginning chapter books to read & discuss for those who wanted to stay an extra hour. It looks like you’ve gotten some great suggestions for books to read together in the future from other commenters. Enjoy your week off school! Stay well!

Your blockheads quilt is going to be so pretty. The blocks are beautiful. Reading those books are so wonderful for Eva. She is a lucky girl. She will remember these times forever. I went into my quilt room yesterday. And it is a disaster after a year of Covid and lots of appliquing. I am making a new “To Do” list today. No more appliquing until some blocks get put together. I am having a definite “I am so over this” week😂. Take care.

I commend you for staying with your work on BH3. I am woefully behind, and don’t feel any urge to pick it back up again.
Now, as for reading to kids!! I love it! I read all sorts of things to my kids as they grew up. All the Narnia books, most of the HP books, even some classics like Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Black Beauty. There was a 10-year gap between oldest and youngest, so when only the little one was left to read to, we did Junie B. Jones and much historical fiction (my favorite). Of the 3 kids, only the oldest became a reader, but I don’t think he reads all that much now. Oh well; I exposed them to books, at least.

Wow…looks like you are getting close on those blocks and you can do it! Reading to kids is so good and I did so long ago but my children are grown now and they read to their children…they enjoyed it so much that they have done just the same with theirs. I have been doing the Red &White SAL with Lori Holt and couldn’t resist….love the blocks and had to buy the fabrics….loving these blocks and did pick up one of the books I needed. You should do this and it is so fun each week …a new group of block to make! You know you want to Nicole…;)))

We have family friends that take driving vacations. They’ve always read books aloud in the car rather than music or news or whatever. As the boys got older, they also got to help with the reading. BTW, I think crying about a book in front of Eva helps her see that adults have deep feelings, too. I think some kids don’t always get to see that expressed and it’s helpful in their development to realize that big people are very much like them.

Love your block and can’t wait to see it finished! Now I’m going to have to check out that red and white quiltalong. As for books, for fifth graders we just read Tuck Everlasting and the Percy Jackson series. For my 1st graders it was Junie B. Jones, and the third graders it was Judy Moody. The Tale of Despereaux is a cute one too as are the A to Z mystery series and Magic Tree house.

Have you read My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George? There are five books in the series. I also liked Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. The Wayside School series are fun books to read. The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling is a take on King Midas.
