The Little Village Quilt-a-Long

Have you heard of The Little Village Quilt-a-Long?  I know, I know, another quilt along? Yes, but this one is special. Honestly, what is it about 2020 that makes me want to participate in every quilt along I hear about? I want to feel connected, I want to do something that is sustainable and will have a definite end date. All the qualities the current COVID-19 situation precludes. Lots of nice people are participating. Every week there will be new block patterns. At the end of six weeks, it will be over. And everyone will have something nice to show for their time and effort.

Jessica Dayon is hosting the project.  You can read all about it on her blog or on her Instagram site. Here are the fabric requirements. And here are the first week's patterns. Each 12" block is a traditional house block and contains a different 6" block, reminiscent of a "barn quilt block".

You can do your blocks in any color scheme of course, but I fell hard for the red color scheme. I gathered up a selection of red fabrics, mostly from Minick and Simpson collections. I started with a group called "Farmhouse Reds", but shortly discovered I also had most of the reds from an earlier collection of theirs called "Crazy For Reds". Both groups coordinate brilliantly.

I've been making so many red quilts lately I am going to have to re-decorate my house to work them into the decor.

I doubt I will be able to keep up with the four blocks per week schedule, with the holidays coming up and all the other projects I am working on. However, the patterns are free, and it takes little effort to download them or print them out for later. For me, there is no sense of urgency to get this project finished, but it will be a nice distraction to work on for the next little while. Along with the umpteen others I have started!

  7. You can’t go wrong with red! And, is there ever such thing as too much red? I doubt it! The little barn quilts will be a fun touch on those barns! Stay well!

  10. I saw this too but I can’t take it on now so am downloading as she goes. I really want a house quilt to represent this year of shelter-at-home and this is my favorite. I’ve been sewing like crazy this year so houses with blocks are best!
