This was close!

I needed to put the binding on my early fall quilt, but since it had been a year since I finished the thing, I couldn’t find the fabric I had set aside to use for the binding.  I have no clue why I procrastinate so much when it comes to sewing on the bindings to my quilts.  The hand sewing isn’t an issue–it seems to me to be a rather calming and peaceful activity.  I love the picture I have in my mind of me sitting on the sofa doing hand work–very domestic and kind of womanly.  Do any of you find that you delay sewing on your bindings too?  What are your reasons?

Anyway, after searching around in my stash out in the garage for an hour, I finally located a piece of one of the fabrics I had used in the quilt in the stash box labeled "Browns".  A very small piece.

I figured if I cut my binding narrow (2 inches) I would possibly have enough fabric to go around the quilt.  You can see in the photo above how much fabric I had left over after cutting my eight strips.

I know I recently posted a picture of the quilt, but here it is again:

The pattern came from a book called "Wild About Flowers", and is called "Three Bean Salad".  Super fast and easy to do.  In fact, every pattern in that book is a winner.

This is the fun all over quilting design of sunflowers, which really shows through on the back side.

  1. Don’t you love it when you use up every scrap but there is actually enough! It’s so much better than being short by an inch or two. You did a wonderful job on the quilitng.

  3. I need to train myself to cut the binding when I begin quilting. Then it would be ready to go. I think it is the cutting and piecing of those long strips that keeps me from finsihing binding a quilt.

  5. Wow – you lucked out! Glad you had enough of that perfect sunflower fabric for your binding. The quilt is very nice. I love the quilting design.
I don’t enjoy hand sewing, so that’s why I procrastinate on my bindings. I have 4 that are waiting to be hand stitched! Of course, I also don’t want a heavy quilt on my lap when it’s hot outside!

  7. I would say that 95% of the time when I finish a quilt top aka flimsy I make my binding. I have several boxes full of bindings waiting for the flimsies to become real quilts – LOL. And, then when it’s finally a real quilt I will machine sew the binding to the front of the quilt and sit and sew it down immediately. I love to handsew so I look forward to sewing binding. In fact, I have several friends who detest doing bindings and I beg them to let me do it.

  9. Oh I can “sew” (sorry about that,LOL) relate to this. I don’t understand why I do that either. In fact I just sewed the binding on and down on a quilt that I know was 3 years old. I LOVE handwork and find the whole process of sewing down a binding very soothing, but I’m not a fan of sewing it on the quilt and I think maybe that’s why I put it off and just fold the quilt up and store it. Anyway your not alone and love that quilt, so pretty. Who is the designer of the book – thanks – karen

  11. Yikes! I’m glad you had enough fabric. The quilt is gorgeous.
I am really bad at binding too. I just don’t like sewing long straight lines…BORING.

  13. The sunflower quilt is so nice! I love your color choices and placements.
(I make my binding when I make the backing, just to get it done. I label it and it sits in a basket until the quilting is done.)

  15. Lovely quilt. Most times, I try to make the binding when I finish up a flimsy, then wind it on an old cardboard spool from ribbon. Then, I hang to flimsy and backing on a hanger and hang the spool of binding on the hanger with a string or something. Thats if I’m feeling particularly efficient, that is….

  17. Beautiful quilt! I, too, procrastinate on doing the binding. Unlike you I do not enjoy doing it. It’s my least favorite part of creating a quilt.
Hope you’re having a good week!
    God bless 🙂

  19. Don’t worry about posting it twice. I love seeing your quilts over and over and over and over…..
I have nominated you, Nicole, for the “Nice Matters” award. Not sure where this started, but when I think of nice I think of you. If you like, go to Blackberry Creek, save the award to your computer and post it at Sister’s Choice. You can also nominate others if you like.

  21. That was close alright!!
The machine quilting on it is perfect. Do you do the machine quilting yourself?
I have been enjoying your blog but I haven’t been commenting much lately – so I am still here :))

  23. Wow! The quilt looks beautiful. How lucky that you were able to eek out enough fabric for the binding (which happens to be the part that I put off doing, too).

  25. Love the quilt! Sunflowers are a favorite of mine, so I really admire the quilting.
I love to sew on bindings because it means that the quilt is finally DONE! I generally cut it when I cut the blocks.
My problem is that I start sewing blocks together and then get sidetracked. Or I sew all the blocks up and then delay sewing them together. I never have a finished top sitting around waiting for quilting or binding – by that stage I’m eager to be finished.

  27. Love the quilting.
I then to get stalled at putting the boarders on, I can know what I am planning on doing, but it makes no difference. Don’t know why.
