Lisa of Stashmaster and I both bought the fatquarter bundle called Roman Holiday by Moda. We emailed back and forth quite a bit, tossing out possible patterns that would be appropriate with this pretty, not too Christmassy fabric collection. One detail we decided was that since the collection was released as a Holiday group, the design we selected should contain some stars. There have been some beautiful quilts made out of this fabric lately, one favorite from the book Comfort and Joy by Brenda Riddle. Her quilt is called Coventry. Definitely a quilt I will make at some future date.
Eventually, Lisa and I agreed that a pattern we really liked for this Roman Holiday group was Opening Day, a Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company pattern that involved beau coups stars. One of the best things about having quilting buddies with similar taste as one’s own, is that you can work together on mutually pleasing projects. We picked this pattern to use with the fabric group and while I have been sitting home playing with my puppy, Lisa has made all kinds of progress on it!
Please check out the link to Lisa’s blog so you can see the work she has accomplished on this quilt top. She has all her star blocks made already for the center panel of the quilt. I had everything all organized in little zip lock baggies, but had not done one stitch of sewing. Until yesterday. My goal was to get all caught up with Lisa (no, it isn’t a contest, but she is always ahead of me lately!) I had a plan to make 144 flying geese units in five hours. Did I get it done? Nope. But let me just say, I made a LOT of flying geese. I’m kind of goosed out today, but I will get the little guys finished. Soon.

I made Coventry several months ago and I’m planning to quilt it next week. It’s a definite favorite of mine!

This is really a fun project, I’m still knee-deep in flying geese, but also still enjoying making them. I can’t wait to get this all together, but it’s been set aside while I work on my blended quilt project.

I love how you guys are always committing and actually doing stuff. I need to do more of that! Can’t wait to see it all unfold!

What method do you use for making your geese?

So, are you telling us you’ve been goosed LOL??? Boy, looks like you’re having fun — can’t wait to see the finished quilts.

I ordered and just received a Jelly Roll of these fabrics. Fat Quarter Shop had it on sale for half price ($15.00) so I just had to take advantage. Don’t know what I’ll do with it, but I love the fabrics. I’ve never worked with a jelly roll before.

I really like this fabric done in this pattern. It will be beautiful when you finish. Have not seen Brenda Riddle’s book. Need to look for it.

I love the holiday collections that don’t scream “Christmas” and this is one of them. I haven’t bought it yet so I may have to try and find a sale.

I like Miss Rosie patterns, and this will be great in that line. It’s fun to have a friend stitching along, either in the room or across the country.
