Two Color Quilt Challenge and Friday Finish #10

IMG_1625

I loved making this quilt top, from the moment I discovered some long forgotten already completed red and white half square triangles hidden away in a project box up on a high shelf in the closet.  The pattern is called Red Union Square from the book The Simple Joys of Quilting by Joan Hanson and Mary Hickey.   Only nine pieced blocks and a simple diagonal set and pieced inner border.  Believe it or not, I still have half a box of half square triangles left over!

It has been so much fun to have some of you join me in making a Two Color Quilt and I hope that you liked the process and are happy with your results.  So far, I have heard from two of you who have finished the project, so if I don’t mention you, let me know so I can refer people to your blog for a look.

Please check out Patti’s blog and Toni’s blog to see what they have done.  Patti’s quilt is a classic example of what most people think of when they hear “Two Color Quilt”, and I have been raving about it since she finished it in June.  I liked hers so much, I have started my own version of it in blues.  Toni, on the other hand, took the basic rules and ran with it, creating something so fresh and modern.  She calls hers “Cappucino Daisies”.  It is stand up and clap adorable.  You will love seeing what these two gals have done!

As much as I enjoyed making my red and white quilt, let’s just say I will not be entering it into any quilting competitions!  I chopped off more points than I normally do, and my border is a bit rumply.  Plus, I didn’t have enough of the toile fabric to do the borders properly and had to piece the heck out of them.  The results are pleasant enough, but not my best work!

  3. Nicole, it’s just gorgeous…I think I love everything about it: the color combination, the pattern and the fabric choices (and I can’t detect the chopped points!). I think I have to add a new book on my wish list ;o).
    Congatulations on the 10th FF!!!
    Cheers, Julia

  11. Nicole: It’s beautiful. You did an outstanding job. Don’t be so critical of yourself. When it’s “just a top” of course it’s going to have a few wobbles. Once it’s quilted, it’s going to be perfection. Makes me want to do a red and white quilt!

  13. Well, I think it is simply wonderful – Great job! I followed your link to Toni’s quilt and think it is just the cutest thing. Patti’s is quite nice too. You ladies all did a superb job.

  17. This might be my favorite of your summer Friday Finishes! I’m not a huge fan of toile, but it works perfectly here. Beautiful.

  21. Nicole….I think that this red combo is quite sophisticated and beautiful. I had a non-blogging friend visiting this weekend, who in my opinion is also an expert quilter. She just loved all of your summer Friday finishes…she called them amazing. Then we moved on to the other album and she just thinks you are a splendid quilter, with great color choice taste, too. I told her all about Ozzie’s mayhem and we shared a laugh or two over that, too. I think I may have convinced her to eventual start a blog because they are so fun.

  23. This two color quilt looks great to me! If you enjoyed making it and you got “pleasant” results…..seems to me you are doing fine! I like it and I’m pretty picky. Will visit your blog again! Pat

  25. It turned out so pretty! And Patti and Toni’s are wonderful too!
I didn’t sign up for the challenge because I just knew I wouldn’t have time in the summer to get it done. But I still have my fabric and pattern set aside to do my own 2 colour quilt some day…maybe in the winter when there’s not much else to do except quilt!

  27. What a beautiful quilt. I think with all the fabric lines out there we thing we need to use 50 fabrics in every quilt! Yours is a fine example of why we don’t! I just love it. Very inspirational!

  29. Nicole, The quilt is gorgeous and I totally agree with all the other comments. However, you must fix the borders.I know we are not looking for perfection, but Nicole your previous quilts have been OUTSTANDING and this one looks like you were trying to get it completed for a Friday finish. That top border is not going to quilt itself unrumply.Take the time to redo the borders.Trust me,I learned the hard way from experience and once someone told me how to add on borders correctly, I have never had rumply edges. Now,I do have problems with losing points. . .

  31. Nicole,
You have inspired me. I happen to own the book and have red fabric! So the quilt you just finished is my next project. Thanks for the inspiration and I hope the new job is going well. Liz

  33. This is lovely, I love two color quilts and frequently make them in scrappy combinations.
I think I even have that book.
