Hi Everyone. Sorry if you thought I dropped out of sight. Typepad has been under attack the past week by evil gremlins and it hasn't been possible for me to get onto the site to post. I think commenting was affected too. The few comments I did get posted four or five times each, and most I couldn't respond to! Hopefully the IT gurus at Typepad will have worked things out and gotten everything back to rights. Honestly, who are these people who try to bring companies networks down? Why, I wonder?
On the sewing front, there hasn't been much going on. I have had my nose stuck in a book for the past few days, a very long book. I don't usually go in for fantasy, but the Game of Thrones series has me hooked. The author includes much violence and quite a bit of sex, which takes some getting used to. No bad language, at least in words we use! The author is so imaginative, honestly, I have never read anything quite like this. There are seven kingdoms in this fantasy world, all fighting for power. Each chapter is from the point of view of a different character in the book. The characters are so well drawn, and develop over time, if the author lets them live, that is. I have never seen an author for killing off main characters the reader has gotten fond of.
I used to read Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley series, and when she killed off a main character, I put the book down and swore I would never read her again. I felt like the Annie Wilkes character in the Steven King book Misery. I wanted to meet up with the author and plead with her to bring the character back. (Not cut his toes off like Annie did, until he promised to do what she asked). Anyway, that put me off her books for good.
I am getting used to the main figures in the Game of Thrones books dropping like flies by now. At least there are a lot of them who are interesting, so when you lose one there are others to fall back on. George R.R. Martin, the author, is very democratic about who he kills off–sometimes it's a bad guy, so things even out.
The series is also a popular HBO tv show, with seven seasons slated to show. The program is in its fourth season now, and George Martin has only written five of the books, so hopefully he will get cracking. The books tend to be near 1000 pages, and are so full of detail and complex plot lines, I imagine they take a long time to write. Don't fail us George. You must finish this series so we all aren't left hanging.

I’ve had so many friends recommend these books. But I’m hesitant… Maybe this will be my summer reading. I’m wading through The Goldfinch right now. I’m only about half way…

Lol – You are blending Dolores Claiborne and Annie Wilkes from Misery 🙂 Stephen King’s stories are my favorite! Lately, I have been reading the Sherlock Holmes stories – talk about killing off a main character!!

Oh! I so agree with you. The Game of Thrones books were great and the television series follows the books closely. (I think George Martin is also a screenwriter, and it shows) When you make it through them you might like to check out Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books. They are awesome. Starz is set to start a television series with them this summer.

Bummer about Typepad and I hope the problems are soon fixed. I agree with you, what’s the point of hacking Typepad?
I’ve been reading a lot recently, too, so perhaps it’s the season. My reading is much tamer than your choices tho. 🙂
Our fabrics will be there when we get back to them.
Hugs!

How disappointing that someone would hack into Typepad. Don’t you wish people would find more productive ways to use their hacking stills?!? I am a big fan of Game of Thrones too–the series and the books. I started reading the books after I got hooked on the show. I was going to hold off reading ahead in the books but it’s too hard to resist finding out what happens next.

So glad you cleared that up about your blog and coments! I was one of those who posted several time. I’m on the second Game of Thrones book and also watch the series. I’m trying to catch up but they are loooong reading! Really fun to read though 🙂

The gremlin image you found is fantastic! My daughter loves Game of Thrones but I haven’t watched it. My tv series are Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, and Mad Men.

My son loves both the books and TV series of Game of Thrones. I haven’t dared dive into them yet. I’m worried about becoming too absorbed.

Nicole, thank you for another book post! Because of you I discovered the books of Louise Penny and I think a few other authors (can’t remember at the moment).
I am with you about inspector Linley. After the death of that one caracter (I love that you don’t give away the name (-:), I kept reading but didn’t quite enjoy it anymore. And although I own the latest book, I am hesistant to start reading it because of the mixed reviews.
And now Game of Thrones? Really? I don’t even like Tolkien, but if you recommend it, it must be good… 🙂

I haven’t been doing much reading lately but when I do, it is usually short stories.
Have you watched any of the series? I wonder if the books are better.
