Under the Weather, But Still Kicking

Apple Sauce alternate blocks
I've had a cold/virus this week, and have not had much pep. In my life, for certain I have had colds worse than this one, but it's been enough to curtail my activities.

I did cut out most of the alternate blocks for the Apple Sauce quilt top, and I have started making the 80 paper-pieced square in a square blocks for the border. It is such a great feeling to use up all this beautiful BasicGrey fabric.

Square in a square border blocks for Apple Sauce
Square in a square blocks have certainly been a feature in my quilting life lately, haven't they? 14 down, 64 to go. It is pretty mindless sewing and trimming, so I can listen to audiobooks or podcasts while I sew.

Mostly I have been reading books and lying on my chaise lounge, coughing, clearing my throat, and blowing my nose.

This week, I started a highly buzzed book by author Jesmyn Ward, Let Us Descend. Unfortunately, even though I paid for the hardback copy I had to stop reading it. I stuck with it for about 2/3s of the way but had to stop reading it. I just couldn't take the nonstop misery, even though the topic is important. Set in the years before the Civil War, our main character, who is an enslaved woman, experiences every form of torment you can imagine, and some you cannot. It was too much for this reader. Similarly to Lauren Groff (The Vaster Wilds), the author has a knack for describing every awful thing that can happen in the world very eloquently. Not for me.

There are two tv adaptations of recent books that are excellent, that you can watch now if you are interested. Lessons in Chemistry is on Apple TV, starring Brie Larson (from Mad Men fame) and is so good. The other show we started watching is the Netflix adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See, starring the unlikely pair Hugh Laurie and Mark Ruffalo. Both are doing an amazing job in roles I never would have thought right for them. It is a riveting story and they are doing it justice.

I hope to rejoin the living today and carry out my normal schedule. I have been consuming bowls of chicken soup, so perhaps that has cured me.

  1. Sorry you’re not feeling well. Sounds like what my husband had – which turned out to be CoVid. He hardly had any cold symptoms but tested before visiting friends. Turned out positive. He was so sure it was wrong, he did another test…it was also positive! Hope you feel better soon no matter what you have.

  4. I was happy to see the grunge background. I’m planning using it as a background too so it was nice to have a visual. I like it and feel okay to start on it now. As far as reading books that are not uplifting, I have no trouble stopping. There is enough misery in this world without needing to concentrate on it in leisurely reading. Glad you feel better.

  7. I’m sorry you’re sick. Colds are the worst. They are just a waste of time. Btw, I agree with you regarding reading about atrocities in books – it’s just too painful, because you know that somewhere, someone has done that awful thing, and that’s a knowledge that’s hard to get rid of once it’s in your head.

  10. I’m sorry that you have a cold. I agree with you. Colds are a waste of time. I also agree about the paper piecing of economy blocks. It’s mindless sewing that turns out perfect.

  13. I almost always read the books you recommend but I could NEVER not finish a book. I laugh whenever you say that but it’s just not in my dna….it’s like I killed the people in the book.
That said, your description makes me feel like I must read through all the angst and torment. It feels like I owe all enslaved people that little bit of “I don’t like to read about this” compared to the actual anguish they suffered. I’m off to search for it on kindle. As always, thanks for the book information. And you quilt is looking beautiful.

  16. A while back, I was struggling with getting my square in a square block to be accurate. At that time I didn’t have the right size of paper piecing paper so I drafted my own and made photocopies. What a difference it made in my block outcomes!
    Feel better soon!

  19. Sorry to hear that you are under the weather. Hopefully this irritation will move on! I’m attempting simple square in a square blocks with a finished size of 2”, for a quilt block with only 5 pieces they sure are a challenge. I cannot find any foundation papers for that size, I may try to draft my own. Take care!

  28. I’m watching Lessons in Chemistry. I’m really enjoying it. I’m the same with books or movies…if I am not enjoying it I turn it off. I really love those blocks.
    hope you feel 100% soon.

  31. I actually stopped about quarter through “Chemistry” because it just wasn’t feeling realistic I guess. I am liking this quilt a lot. Hope you are on the tail end of the cold now.

  34. I had exactly the same reaction to Let Us Descend, Nicole. I love Ward’s writing, but the book was depressing me so much I realized I didn’t want all they horror in my head any longer. I bailed at 60%, something I almost never do. Usually if I’m going to bail it happens right away.
    Hope you feel better soon…

  37. Hope you continue to feel better! Chicken soup always helps and airborne tablets were great when I was sick with a horrible cold. Can’t wait to see your finish!
