Unfinished Christmas Quilts

IMG_3906

Have you ever thought you could read your pet's mind?  Sophie seems to be telling me "You blog too much.  You sew too much.  You fool around too much when you could be playing with me.  I don't know what you do with your time, but it could be far better spent".  Here she is, all sacked out on my latest stack of quilt flimsies.  Silly girl.

I have been doing a lot of blogging about Christmas quilts that I have made and enjoy in my home during the holidays.  I thought you might be interested to know that there are other Christmas quilts in my possession that are not finished.  There are a lot of reasons for not finishing a holiday quilt–usually I have house guests and have a reason to totally clean up my sewing room so I can use the bed in there for someone.  Things get put away and I start up with a new project, and there you are.  Sad.

I have an idea though.  How about if I show you a couple of my unfinished holiday quilt tops over the next few days and give the unfinished projects away in a giveaway?   Hmmm?

IMG_3905

Here is a small quilt that is nearly finished.  Aren't the snowmen whimsical?   Aren't the colors cheerful?  Wouldn't this be a fun cuddle quilt for a child during the holidays?  Or even a fun wall hanging?  The fabrics are some Sandy Gervais group that came out a few years ago.  Don't ask me the name, I can't remember.  Added later:  Bundle Up is the name of the fabric.

Does anyone know what book this pattern is in?  I packed the top away, unfinished, and have no clue what book the pattern is in so I can finish it. (Does anyone see a trend here with my memory?)

ADDED LATER:

The Internet is truly amazing.  Karen, in Australia, has told me where the pattern is for this quilt.  You will not believe this, but it is in the exact same Fons and Porter Nov/Dec 2002 issue that my Stars and Trees Christmas quilt is in.  Duh.  How could I not know that?  I had to get the magazine out to tell you all where I got the pattern for Stars and Trees.  Any way, huge hugs to Karen!  My Australian friends are really coming through for me lately!

Added even later:

This is even more incredible,  Rebecca emailed meto say that the pattern for this quilt is also in a book called Clever Quilts Encore by Susan Teegarden Dissmore.  I dragged out the book, and sure enough, there is the pattern "Birds of a Feather", complete with black containment border and piano key border.  I think my inspiration to use the snowmen came from the Fons and Porter magazine, and the inspiration for the black border and piano key border came from the book.  Weird!

I have all sorts of stuff in the project box–I see the black strips for the containment border– some strip sets for what, a piano key border?  Help! If anyone recognizes this pattern, please let me know so I can try to make a bit more progress with it.  Before I send it to the person who is randomly selected to receive it in my giveaway!

IMG_3904

See?  I have loads of left over fabric here in the project box.  The strip sets are on the right, the containment border is all cut out, this quilt is almost a done deal!  If you would like me to send you this unfinished quilt top, please leave a comment on this post and I will announce the winner on Monday.

Save a quilt.   Make a comment!  I will announce the winner on Monday.

  1. Hi Nicole,
It has been such a pleasure viewing your Christmas Trunk show each morning. I had to smile at your predicament with the snowman quilt. I too had that problem several times. Now UFO’s have an index card with the pattern name and book (or magazine)title. And the book has a note saying “UFO” on the cover because you guessed it, I have given away books thinking I no longer want them and oops. Have a great weekend.

  3. I have enjoyed looking at your quilts and Sophia. I know how much company a dog can be, I just lost my dog after 16 1/2 years. The house is very empty. Have a Merry Christmas…

  7. I would love to own this quilt! One of my favorite blocks is the Log Cabin, but unfortunately I can’t help you with the name or the book for this one…I have quite a few unfinished Christmas quilts and have made a 2010 resolution to finish them before I start another Christmas quilt.

  9. Hi! I’ve loved reading your stories about your Christmas quilts. I know first hand about unfinished ones. The gift quilts always seem to “elbow” mine to the side. I love your little snowmen, and would be happy to finish it. It reminds me of some patterns in the two books on using panels, border fabrics by Susan Dissmore (I think that’s her name.) http://tinyurl.com/ydmnx52 is the link for a picture of one of her books on Amazon. I hope that gives you some ideas. Thanks for sharing your stories with us.

  11. Hello Nicole,
I just sent an email to you instead of commenting here on your blog. My daughter has just showed me what to do.
Anyway, I think the unfinished Christmas quilt pattern may have come out of the Fons and Porter Nov/Dec 2002 issue. The quilt is called Snow Buddies. This issue also featured the Cozy Christmas quilt which you have definitely made, so I thought perhaps you may have used the Snow Buddies pattern also.
I have admired this quilt for a long time so if you need to find it a home, I would be privileged to own it. I have these good intentions of making certain quilts but due to my beautiful son requiring intense 24 hour care, they generally become only good intentions.
I hope this is the pattern you are looking for!!
    Kind regards
    Karen ( Australia )

  13. Good morning!
Your Christmas quilts are all gorgeous! BUT this little snowman quilt is calling my name! Did you know I have a thing for snowmen? It’s a good thing that my hubby is not a jealous man or I would have some serious problems on my hands. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to win this unfinished project and give it a loving home! Thanks for the chance to win it! How generous of you!

  19. I’ve been enjoying your “Christmas Quilt Parade”! I’ve never had the chance to make one, because it seems everyone else just has to have one made during Christmas (why am I so surprised?). I’ve loved the stories that have gone along with yours! Good luck finding the pattern to the snowman quilt…so cute! And so is Sophie…bet she misses Ozzie.

I referenced your blog the other day about being the new person in classes and guilds and I called you Noelle – sorry. Noelle is the person that introduced me to quilting and shared her vast knowledge.

  27. I’m sure any creative quilter can find a way to use up the fabric for borders or such in the quilt. The green fabrics look so yummy! 🙂
I also enjoy hearing the stories behind the quilts, you’re giving us more than some nice pictures.

  29. The fabric line is ‘Bundle Up’ a cute line from one of my favorite designers Sandy Gervais. The pattern – you are on your own with that – is it one of Sandy’s patterns too?
What was the name of yesterday’s pattern? I know I have seen it but cannot come up with a name. Love that quilt too!
You have a great blog site – keep up the good work!

  57. Hi Nicole,
What a fun looking snowman quilt! I too, fall into the category without a Christmas quilt. It would be fun to have one. I am so impressed with how you already found out the pattern and where to access it. Wow–almost like magic–:).
    Have a great weekend!

  69. Cute cute cute! My sweet stepmother, who is also a FANTASTIC quilter and the one who graciously and patiently taught me to sew is also a snowmen fiend. Well, all things Christmas-related, actually. She plans all year long, buys scads of new decorations each year, and is generally the one responsible for the “magic” that we all feel on the big day. 🙂 Last year, I started working on an incredibly intense applique Christmas quilt that was to be a gift for her this year. Yeah right! Talk about your UFOs! I’m a stay-at-home mommy among many other things, and my quilting hobby gets the bottom of the priority list all the time, unfortunately! Anyhow…if I were to win your giveaway, I would work hard to finish THIS quilt for her this year instead. This one is SO CUTE and much more her style then the one I’ve started. 🙂

Your blog has got me to thinking that I don’t have nearly enough holiday quilts! I always make them but give them away!
I collect snowmen everything and keep them out all year long-much to the maid’s dismay (9 yr son in charge of dusting). I would love your snowman quilt and know that here in PA it would be proudly displayed year round!

  105. My, my, my unfinished quilts aren’t even that far along, but I did finish one I started last year. It’s beautiful! It is from the Adoration book, and is the “How Far to Bethlehem” quilt. It turned out much bigger than I realized, so don’t know where it’s going. I have several grandchildren who would love this quilt. Thanks for sharing. Jane McKay

  109. I have been enjoying your Christmas quilts and the wonderful stories that go with them. I only have one Christmas quilt, and it is a rag quilt. All the rest I’ve made I have given away. Would love to be the winner.

  115. I would love to win your UFO. I did find my copy of 2002 Fons and Porter…I have a sticker on that page so I must have had plans for that pattern. Needless to say, I haven’t done anything with it! If you want to email me, I will share the pattern for the quilt recently shown on QuiltHollow site.

  117. I would be happy to finish your projct; the snowmen are so cute!
Great idea for a giveaway by the way. Our guild will have a UFO-day in January where members can bring their UFOs to get help to move on with it or pass it on to someone who wants to finish it. I have been finishing UFOs this fall and am craving some more…

  121. Your blog is so much fun to read. I love the snowman quilt. I saw some fabric today (clearance section) that was Valentine themed. I may go back and buy a panel of it so that I can make a quilt like this for Valentine’s day. But I’d love this snowman one too!

  145. Oh, the left over fabric is the best. I need to find a place to get scraps of Christmas fabric. I am making my first string quilt, not realizing how MANY scraps you really do need. AAAHHH, the strings or the snowmen, the strings or the snowmen, oh anyway, I guess the strings would look better at my house with their other strings…lol. Merry Christmas, Lori
