I was rummaging around in the stash closet and found this little bundle of beautiful blue fabrics my son Ahren had bought for me when he was at JJStitches in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin last January. I had completely forgotten about them, and was thrilled when they turned up. Vicksburg by Judie Rothermel. Gosh, that sounded so familiar…..
Duh. That was the fabric group Web Sampler II was using! I bought the whole darn kit, and then sold it when I was having one of my fabric purges last spring. What was I thinking, giving up that fabric group???? I tell you, my brain is turning to mush.
So. Now I want more of it. I have this great idea for a project and this will be Perfect. PERFECT. Do you all remember that I was making a quilt with the pattern Raise the Roof by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company more than a year ago? I was using In the Pink fabric by Buggy Barn and just wasn't getting the contrast I wanted. Some of the pinks were super light, and I was using them as medium/darks and the whole thing was just a big old mess. I had the blocks laid out on the floor, trying to figure out what to do, and little Sophie, a puppy at the time peed all over my center blocks. So I put that project up on a very high shelf.
But the pattern haunts me. I really want to do that pattern. With Vicksburg.
I need you to weigh in on this question. I have tons of perfect carmelly lights. I have these fabulous blues, and some nice browns. Here's the question–should I just stick with the blues, or would it work to include the darker browns if they are the same value as the blues???
After a bit of a rummage in the stash, I came up with more blues and browns. Should I just pick one or the other? Or go with both???? Help.

You and I must be early birds. I definitely love blue and brown mixes- two of my favorite colors. I think the combination of both would be very pretty. I liked the pink one too. Maybe you could just wash it and bind it as a little table topper.

I vote for using both blues and browns!! I love that pattern. You’re not starting on this until you’ve finished Little by Little…right?
That Vicksburg fabric is wonderful!
You mentioned a Schnibbles sneak peak on Monday….I got my pattern yesterday and don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m anxious to see what you’ve got started.

Either would be beautiful. Just depends on what you want to do with the finished quilt I think.
With the browns and blues it would be a great quilt to give to your son.
With just the blues, a wonderful two colour quilt.

I love the Vicksburg collection, I have a civil war era project in waiting that is very similar and I can’t wait to start it but I have to FINISH UP the project I’m currently working on…*wink*. Also, during your purge I bought 5 yards of Henry Glass “In the Pink” collection that you said must have been for a backing but you couldn’t remember what project it was for…well, I think the pink one that puppy Sophie soiled is probably the one. It is really so lovely Nicole. I’m with Betty…can’t you wash that beauty up and use it as a small throw?

I always think the more the merrier! I vote blues and browns.

I really love the original brown and pink blocks. You have such an eye for color and placement. I am great at picking out fabric combinations but placing them in a quilt pattern is pretty challenging for me. As for the Vicksburg fabric, as long as you’re making one, while not make two with the other combination? 😉

Blues and browns together are all the rage now. Definitely both! :o)

Blues and browns together would have a richer visual quality, besides being gorgeous. The browns would be very nice, but not as interesting. But I honestly can’t say that I haven’t loved anything that has come out of your sewing room!

More is more! I vote for both blue and brown. The scrappier the better!
After all, what would you do if you lived on the prairie in the last century?

Oh I remember this time, way back when. If it were me, I’d have to use both. Mix ’em up!!! You know I love this pattern. Delightful.

I agree with the general consensus up to now. Use both. It would give the quilt more depth and movement. You have a great eye for color, so don’t hesitate!

Absolutely go with both! It will be stunning!

I vote for using both. Aren’t blue and brown opposites on the color wheel? That makes them complimentary and they’ll be happy together forever.

Love the browns and blues combination – go for it and, yes, do finish up the pink it is lovely as is all of your work. You inspire me.

Oh gorgeous! Those Vicksburg fabrics are so beautiful I’m tempted to jump off my train and go back home and quilt! The blue and browns together would be lovely!!! Can’t wait to see what you pull together!

Well, you certainly don’t need one more person telling you to use both the blue and the brown, AND that the pink and brown quilt is gorgeous and should be finished… AND that that really is a GREAT pattern… yet here’s one more person telling you that!

I love that pattern! I would use both blues and browns and maybe even throw in a tad of black.

I think the blues and browns in similar tones would look really rich and pretty together with carmel colors, too.

Looks like we all feel the same, use both! It will be beautiful. That’s a great pattern.

This would look fabulous either way but just a bit too contrived in the only blues – so go for blues and browns – it will be wonderful

Oh, I love both, definitely! Very nice contrast. Whatever you do, that is a lovely pattern.

I say go for it and do both colors. Lots more hues and shades. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

I made a quilt for my son a few years ago with shirtings, blues and browns (from Charleston II line by Judy Rothermel). It is absolutely gorgeous. So I would use them both! It will be beautiful.

What about taking the pink log cabin blocks and shelve those and use the remaining blocks to go with new blue log cabin blocks? You would be halfway there. Blues, browns and honey colour fabrics are an excellent choice and what beautiful fabrics you have.

That’s one of those patterns that jumps up and down waving “pick me”, “make me”. For now, I’ll ignore its pleas and watch your progress.
