Web Sampler Confession

IMG_1799

I agreed to participate in a Web Sampler Challenge with Perry, Cindy, Nancy, and Lisa.  The deadline was September 1.  I loved the fabric (leftovers shown above) and the blocks turned out very pretty.  There were issues with the border instructions in the finishing kit I chose, so I was planning on making a border of my own design using my leftovers.  I had the 12 sampler blocks all sewn together with the alternate blocks, and everything was looking way cool.

I missed the deadline of September 1 for a very good reason.

I have lost the quilt top.

Seriously, I cannot find it anywhere.  I know I had it folded up in a plastic bag.  It has completely disappeared.  I have torn the sewing room apart and searched in every nook and cranny.  No Web Sampler quilt top.

I am guilty of making a lot of grumbling comments about the instructions for the finishing kit.  Do you think the designer got sick of me bad-mouthing her work and sent evil elves to my house to remove the quilt top from my possession?   In my entire life I have never lost a quilt top.

Here is Ozzie in what is left of my sewing room after I ransacked it.  You can tell he is thinking, "Well Toots, this never would have happened on my watch.  Remember the good old days when it was just you and me?  Things haven't been the same since that new kid came to live with us".

Oh, no.  You don't think Sophie might have done something with it?

  1. I hate that when I can’t find something, rip everything apart only to find it later where I put it for safe keeping and where I would remember to find it. The only good thing is I usually clean things up in the process of restoring order from my tornado search! I hope you find it safe and sound…

  3. I feel your pain. I have been working on a new quilt for my bed. I collected fabric for months, made blocks and now can’t find the blocks ANYWHERE. All this prior to my move so I don’t even have a good excuse. I am sure my cat didn’t hide them…or did she? She does have a habit of stealing my earrings…

  5. I can’t stand not being able to find something. It drives me crazy! I know this sounds weird, but I read it somewhere, a lady said when she can’t find something she sits quietly and thinks about what she’s looking for and says “find” – and then she usually finds it! I was looking for a quilt pattern, had searched EVERYWHERE, and was going nuts trying to find it. So, I did what the lady suggested. I layed down and thought of my quilt pattern and said find – and quess what? The location popped into my head – I “saw” the book that I had stuffed the pattern into. I went to the book, and there it was! I figure that my subconcscious knew where I had put the pattern, and found it for me.
    Good luck in finding it!

  7. Just walk away for a bit. Leave your sewing room and do something else. That will give your brain time to perhaps think better or think outside the box, so to speak. I know it isn’t funny but I must admit I had a small chuckle only because I’ve done the exact same thing!

  9. Oh yes, I can relate! It is very frustrating. That is good advice to stop thinking about it and it will come to you. I am sure Sophie had absolutely nothing to do with it! Love Ozzie’s pensive look.

  11. did you investigate Ozzie’s hiding spot? I got a feeling he has one just to keep you on your toes……..and driving you crazy thinking you lost it lol

  13. Oh, I hate that when that happens! My advise for Sophie: this could be a set up, keep an eye on Ozzie. My advise for you: breath deep… all things will surface/good luck!

  15. It will turn back up…when you are not looking for it. I got mine back from the quilter on Monday and it’s wonderful…even with the miserable border that almost made me stop quilting, I love it.

  17. How frustrating that’s got to be! I wouldn’t blame Sophie – she’s such a sweetie! I haven’t lost anything quilty, but I’ve almost torn up the house looking for my high-school yearbooks. My suspicions are that they are living down in my son’s room, in with his books, even though he’s checked. We rearranged books and bookshelves in the sunroom last winter in order to put a pool table in that room, and soon after that they disappeared. I’m hoping when he moves out they’ll appear. Only other option is that I somehow put them in with a box for the Goodwill, and somebody somewhere is getting a good laugh out of the comments written in them. Maybe I should try MichelleB’s trick. Hope you find it soon! Love the fabrics in it!

  19. Oh NO! Good luck and I hope it turns up soon… Maybe Sophie dragged it to her bed to turn up a comfy spot in secret? Ozzie is so cute. I just love your dogs.
And I too lost a quilt top. ALL WOOL. I was sick about it. I believe it fell out of a car on the way to sew at a friends. I must have dropped it. It was freezing winter and windy, and I think it blew away :o( That was about 4 years ago.

  21. I just HATE it when a top’s/blocks are made and then they disappear! Good luck finding them. I can’t find a very girly brick quilt I made for my HS friend’s suprise DGD. Her son told her he was getting married in Dec and the baby was due in Jan. ’08. That totally rocked her world! LOL! I’m glad my 6 cats won’t be pulling that stunt!!!!

  23. I know what you are going through, I lose things all the time. Ozzie does seem to be looking as though he knows that Sophie had something to do with it. Hope you find it soon.

  25. It’s there . . . somewhere and will show itself when you least expect it. While I’ve not lost a quilt top, other things have disappeared to another dimension around here only to reappear at the oddest times in the strangest places *s*

  27. It will show up and then you will think – oh yea, I remember putting it there now. Did you look in your car? That is usually where I find things I can’t find in the house.

  31. I’ll tell you what I do know – this is such a good post! I’m sorry you lost you quilty efforts but you wrote up such a fun story to go along with it, I can’t help but smile.
Ozzie is just so cute! The things he “says! are perfect.

  33. I know how you feel. For 2 years friends and I made 3-inch blocks from a couple of Judy Rothermel books. Some blocks had over 20 pieces in them! I took them to work and pulled them out on the bus on the way to work-and never noticed I hadn’t put them back. At lunch I went to get them and felt my heart stop. I called my son when he came home from school to see if I left them at home-not there. As a last resort, I called the bus company to see if anyone had found a bag of fabric (I figured that was what a non-quilter would see) and the woman who answered said “are you looking for small quilt blocks?” – the relief I felt was huge. I knew I’d never remake those blocks-way too much work. Never fear – they’ll show up when you least expect it.

  35. Your post made me chuckle today. I can fully understand. But just think how wonderful to have so many quilt tops that you could misplace one! Your posts always inspire me to go home and start a project. I am getting some of my old ones done.

  37. I’m sure it will turn up. Probably when you give up and stop looking for it. At least this time it wasn’t Ozzie or Sophie’s fault. Or was it?………….

  39. Are you sure you didn’t hide it so you didn’t have to finish it? lol…mine still isn’t finished, it lost its place in my mad sewing room when I had to take my “not self imposed” holiday because of my eyes; now I can’t get it in focus again to work on it. Oh, well, maybe next year you will find it and I will be working on mine again and we can set a deadline for them, lol.

  41. Oh you poor thing. It’ll be there somewhere – and you’ll fall over it just when you decide that you don’t need it / can live without it / have started another one….

  43. I have done this too.. the last thing I ‘lost’ I had folded it up inside something else when packing it away..
I have ‘lost’ so many unpickers, I buy two replacements at a time, as with tape measures AND scissors.. where the #$(#*&$(#* do they all go? to suddenly reappaear all at once??
breathe deeply, forget about it for a wee while and it’ll suddenly come to you..

  45. Michelle B has the right idea. Some quiet time would help. I had a friend suggest same thing and it works. Ozzie probably has it safely hidden away and is just waiting for the right moment to get a “reward”. I would love to see your quilt top when you discover its location. You do such beautiful work.
