What’s Not Happening

004
I am having the hardest time being patient.  I have such vivid images of what I want my sewing studio to be like, and so far all I have are my dreams!

There, in the cool empty space, sit my cutting table and sewing table.  I visit them a couple of times each day, and they continue to sit frozen in time.  Before they will be put back to use, the first thing to be done is to install flooring over the bare concrete.  I have decided to go with hardwood, but it has yet to be picked out and brought home for installation.

Next up will be paint.  I have in mind a cool khaki green color, but could change my mind before the brushes and rollers come out!  After that, my new best friend Bill will install the cabinetry that will house all my stash and supplies.  One entire long wall will be cabinetry, with a space in the middle open to allow me to hang a display quilt.  The Quilt of the Month if you will.

I have plans to make a permanent design wall, and will have plenty of wall space left over for my cutting area, pressing area, bookcase, dresser and maybe even that rocking chair and reading lamp!

Can you tell that I am itching to get going with the set up of my new space?  The hardest thing is to wait for the work to begin.

  1. How delicious to imagine the wonderland for creativity you’ll soon have!!!
Methinks I’d have to get the sewing machine set up somewhere (perhaps just plugged into one of those outlets), open the cutting table, and start something, anything,to sooth my sewing-starved imagination.
What shade of wood finish shows pins most clearly?
Yes, you may color me envy green!
    Hugs!

  3. What great and exciting fun! To have a blank canvas and put in everything you already know you need and still have room to put in things you only dream about. I too envy you. Have some fun and enjoy.

  5. A friend of mine with multiple studios recommends 12″ black and white tile floors! She says it is very easy to sweep clean and you can use the tiles as a measuring tool as well. Just a thought!

  7. Sounds lovely. Can’t wait to see the finished space as I’m sure it will be beautiful. Also looking forward to seeing more of your quilts.
p.s. My movers are here right now dragging all of my sewing stuff down the stairs!

  9. I think I would be so anxious that my sewing bldg. would be done way before any room in the house! Take out so I could sew/stitch! It sounds fabulous so far – will be watching the progress as you go and wishing I was hanging out in the rocker!
    The house coming okay?

  11. Nicole, you are creating a dream space for all of us. I will never have that, but that is OK. I will enjoy living this through you. Enjoy dear friend!!!

  13. I’ve painted both studios green without really thinking about it. I went to pick out a color and came home, both times, with about the same color. I love it. I put laminate on my current studio and sewing room floor, and I’ve been very happy with that.

  15. A blank canvas-that is a huge plus! Nothing to un-do. First thing I would do is go pick out your paint color, curtains and flooring(not sure if it’s concrete). Those walls need some color! I love your new space :o) Hang a quilt on the walls too. Can’t wait to see what you do, Amie ;OP

  17. Laminate is a nice choice–in a light shade to keep the outdoors feel I envision your studio having! The black & white squares mentioned above are also interesting! Whatever you choose, make it something easy to keep clean for a certain little someone who will be occupying the space with you!

  19. Beautiful space – does it have heating/air, or is it not needed where you’re at?

  21. When you go to put up a design wall, consider using polar fleece. I got mine at Joanne’s for very little money. Mine is 2 widths of fabric and everything sticks to it and stays put for weeks if necessary. I hung it with a cutain rod. I love it. Can’t wait to see your space when it’s done. The wait is worth it.

  23. Well at least you have a plan, and it sounds like a good one, although waiting for that plan to take shape is tough. That’s the saddest, loneliest picture I’ve ever seen . . . .

  25. Nicki, will your cabinet guy be building everything from scratch? Do you need help laying the room out? I’d be happy to draw it up on my cabinet design program so you can see it in different views. Let me know if you would like any help.

  27. We just moved, too, and I have to share my sewing room with a guest room, so it’s going to be crowded. However, we came up with a plan of sorts, and I think it will work. I, too, am anxiously waiting to get the machine set up and some stitching done. I need to get at it this weekend and then post some pics. Good luck!

  31. Waiting for your sewing room and waiting for that grandchild…must be truly trying your patience. I have some new-to-me cabinets coming for my sewing room and it makes me want to pack everything up and start again with new paint and a plan. Mmmm, maybe you have inspired me yet again.

  33. It looks like you have a nice sized shape. It’s exciting to be able to build the space out like you want literally from the floor up. I’m looking forward to seeing the steps to completion!

  35. Your own studio. Awesome. The quilts will be flying out soon. You could do prep work in the meantime? Just a thought. Quilting will go by the wayside when the little one makes it’s arrival. Ask me how I know.

  37. Waiting is the hardest, but the planning is so much fun! Soon you’ll be back to your passion, Nicole!
    Cheers!

  39. Hi Nicole,
It is fun learning about your new location! My son is down your way–last night he attended a game at the Giant’s stadium and today is driving to Hanford for the night. I loved the pics of the hummingbirds. Your variety looks much larger than ours here in central WA. Ours are about 2 inches long.
Well, it just takes time to settle in, doesn’t it? Your new studio sounds wonderful. It will be fun to watch it take shape. Will there be a crib in the corner? : )
    Take care.

  41. It sounds fabulous. I am hoping to soon be in your situation. We are making an offer on our dream house in 2 hours. I would have the entire 3rd floor as a quilt studio. Incredible space light and view. I am a nervous wreck!

  43. p.s. There are several books out about setting up your sewing space (in fact, that’s the title of one of them) so you may want to check out the library if you don’t have one. Of course, having been a quilter for years, you probably have a good idea of what layout works best for you.
    Hugs!

  45. Fun times! (One bit of a friend’s advice that served us well: When you know the floor color and have settled on a wall color, do the painting before the floor is laid. *So* much easier and FASTER when you don’t have to fret about any smudges sneaking their way onto the floor.)
