When the cat’s away…!

Oh hello…

Long time no see! Guest Blogger Sara here! The above shot is of mom's completed cushion redesign for the patio set she gifted me. A gorgeous toile complete with red stripe and button. A project like this would have really overwhelmed me, but she whipped this together in a mater of hours. She and dad brought up a few other old pieces of furniture that have been gently used: a leather "poet's" chair, cheap but grand book cases in need of a shabby chic coat of white paint, a gorgeous rug that cost about the same amount as a small country (and was one foot too long for my library room. Gah. So they took that back to the storage locker.) Our new home is beginning to feel full and cozy!

Farm Report

In March I quit my job at Ridge Winery, and moved into my new house with The Wine Maker. After living apart for a year, this was a happy home coming. My gorgeous friend Lisa was married that month in Maui, so we spent a week lounging around at the Ritz. Meanwhile, our six chickens were left at home with a chicken sitter. Trouble is, the neighborhood fox helped him self to Rosie (the world's most expensive chicken) and Bella. I was pretty devastated, he even managed to take a bite out of one of the cochins, Bobbin, but she fought him off. Having lost our best egg layers, we decided to adopt two new baby chicks. Above are 6 week old Whinny, a Rhode Island Red, and Sugar, a Barred Rock hen.

Tomorrow I'll have a little post on how our urban farm is going, and show off my birthday present from The Wine Maker- a composter!

  1. Happy Birthday, Sara. So, so, so good to have you guest posting. Thanks for the update, RIP Rosie and Bella. Welcome to the newbies! Love the covers your mother made for the patio set, just gorgeous. Looking forward to your guest posts…also whining about the return of The Wine Maker’s Wife. Guess what…Matt is ranked #65 in the nation as a junior in swimming…can you believe it??? Fancy swim schools have been inquiring. One in CA!

  3. Sara, hello! Thanks so much for keeping the posts going while your mom’s away. Love the furniture redo. Enjoy them and thank you for sharing the pics 🙂
So sorry to hear about the fox trauma with your chickens. That would really upset me too. I hope the new chickens grow up happy and healthy.

  9. Sara, A very Happy Birthday to you. I have truly missed your blog and chatting about chickens, queen bee’s gone missing and of course the ‘Hoop Dancing’ wasn’t it? The day that all the chickens were looking in the window wondering what in the world you were doing? I’m very sorry about poor little Rosie and Bella…wasn’t it Rosie that had to have stitches when she was a youngster? The two new chicks are adorable and will, I’m sure grow into beautiful ladies very quickly. Your patio furniture looks wonderful, your mom is such a whiz at these things. After two years as a quilter I’m limping along on just my 8th quilt…but then, I have the issues that affect my stamina so I don’t feel too badly. It’s just that there are so many projects, so many fabrics and so little time. *sigh* Ah well, life is good here and it certainly sounds like yours is going wonderfully. I was really happy to read that after your year of seeing each other when you could manage it, you and the winemaker settling into your home together. That really made my day complete. Thanks so much for the updates. Sending big hugs your way.

  11. How nice that you are filling in while your mom is away! Have been wondering how life has been for the winemaker’s wife. Was extremely sorry to hear about Rosie and Bella, and wish your new chicks well. Your mom’s postings about your new job at the olive bar sound so enticing that I hope to take a trip to Murphys some day and check it out. Sounds wonderful. And how thrilled you must be to be having your parents living nearby!

  13. I am laughing about your gift of a composter. For Mother’s Day I received a beautiful apron in a French pattern. It sounds silly, but I have wanted this apron for sooooo long (it wasn’t my only gift, so don’t judge my poor family). My point is . . . isn’t it funny what brings us joy?

  15. Sara, I ran onto an article my “Bird’s and Bloom’s” magazine today that made me think of you. It was written by Christy Wilhelmi, a lady who does organic gardening. In the article, she states that “all gardeners should compost their garden and kitchen waste because composting closes the natural gardening loop.” So there ya go!!! I’m thinking you might enjoy visiting her website, ‘gardenerd.com’ … Now let the composting begin!

  17. Kathleen- Thank you so much! It was sad for a while… I didn’t have much to post on, and was living out of my suitcase at my in laws house. But now I’m considering blogging again, and really enjoying the idea of mom & dad being closer.

  19. Nancy- I’m with ya.. I have not had the space to quilt for quite some time, and really miss it. But now that my sewing room is finished at the house I can begin to FINISH my projects. Great to hear from you!!!
