I have finished the 169 pinwheel and hourglass blocks for the Windmills quilt. 85 pinwheels and 84 hourglass blocks. And a mess of flying geese for the border, but I didn't count them. The original pattern that inspired me is called Windmills and is designed by Bonnie Blue/Red Crinoline Quilts. I kept the block size at 4 1/2 inches, but added rows. I also had a very intentional plan for the color layout, rather than the scrappy random layout suggested by the pattern.
There was considerable fretting and switching up of blocks for this project, and I am happy with my finished result. There will be one more solid brown outer border, so the quilt should end up being somewhere around 72" square. I will be working on sewing those blocks and rows together this week.
Since I remade so many blocks, I had a ton of hourglass blocks left over for a table runner!
I also have a little extra project to use up the red and blue leftovers for a Memorial Day/Fourth of July table topper. I will share that with you this week once I get my pieces cut out and a block or two made.
In other news, Ozzie got sick. He is going to be 11 years old this June, and in his entire life, he has only been sick one other time. Oh, he has been to the vet with injuries, but this time he was laid low with some bug or other since Wednesday. The only thing that comforts him is Eva's Elsa blanket. Luckily it is washable.
This is a dog who is so active. It was very disturbing to have him not eat, not drink, not bark at the mailman, not get excited when the front door opened, and just lay on the floor still as could be. The vet did $500 worth of tests and it looks like he may have a urinary tract infection. We won't know until today (Monday) if he can have antibiotics. Isn't that strange? At any rate, he is somewhat better as I write this. He ate some white rice and boiled chicken, has been drinking water and has been out to pee etc. Poor Ozzie. It is so sad when your pet is unhappy and looks at you wondering why you don't fix it.

The quilt is great. It takes awhile to see the hourglass blocks, at least for me. So sad about Ozzie, hope she is better today.

What a great top and looks like a labor of love with all those pieces. Do like the color range better….poor Ozzie…hope he feels better soon and perhaps a “frosty paws” for a treat later.

Your layout works beautifully in featuring the various colorways. I appreciate being able to view the close ups of this great quilt.
I hope Ozzie continues to improve. His eating rice and chicken are an absolute sign of encouragement

I’m so sorry about Ozzie. I hope he’s on the mend and back to acting like himself very, very soon.

Your quilt is looking lovely.
I hope Ozzie is back to his old self soon. It is terrible when they are sick. . especially since we don’t speak “doggish”.
Have a fun day.

Your poor little guy looks so miserable. I agree that it’s hard when they can’t tell us where it hurts. Extra snuggles to Ozzie & good wishes for his speedy recovery! 🐶

I love your layout! Hard-won, but it looks great. A perfect mix of sort-of-scrappy and “see-me.” Nice work! Can’t wait to see the finish.
Hope Ozzie feels all better soon. Eva, too. And your father.

Love how your pinwheel quilt turned out! And that you can make table topper.
Sorry that Ozzie is sick I feel with you. M cat Merlin is now 13 years old (will be 14 in July) and when I was at the vet last autumn she discoverd that he has problems with the hips. Now I need to give him medicine about every 6 weeks. Not his favorite time and not mine either.

So sorry about Ozzie, hope he feels better soon! Vet bills seem so expensive but they know we will pay it to make sure our pets feel better. Your quilt layout looks great! It showcases the fabric without being too busy looking. Can’t wait to see what you make up with your leftovers.

I honestly like your lay out better than the original! Think I will have to pin it. I used your four patch/chain alternate block for your blockheads idea in another sampler quilt I am doing with my guild. Love your ideas.
